The job market today is more competitive than ever, with limited openings and more applicants. For many job seekers there is always going to be someone more qualified than you applying for the same positions. Therefore, it is important to find ways of edging out the competition. Herein are guidelines and tips that will help you land that dream job.
The first document that your potential employee will come across is your resume. As such, a well written resume will significantly increase your chances of landing that interview. Hiring managers spend little time looking through resumes. Therefore, it is in a candidate’s best interest that their resumes catch the hiring manager’s attention. The most important thing they look for is whether the skills you have will be an asset to the company or business. Job applicants must always update their resumes in relation to the job being applied. A good resume should make good use of job statistics and quantifiable achievements while referencing the particular position.
A good resume will help you land an interview but that is just half the battle for the job. Candidates who take their time to find out more about what the company deals with, generally is fair better during interviews. Hiring managers can easily tell how much a candidate knows about their company through simple questions. To increase your chances of getting hired, you can subtly showcase your knowledge by seeking clarifications about certain aspects of the company. However, you should be careful not to overdo this. It may send the message that you are intentionally trying to impress the panel.
It is a well-known fact that many resumes do not make it to the hiring manager. This can be further compounded if you are competing for a position with hundreds of other candidates. If possible, personally submitting your resume makes sure that it makes it into the right hands. The hiring manager is also more likely to look at it as compared to the hundreds sitting in their email inbox. Additionally, it is a good practice to follow up with calls or emails to be sure it arrived.
· Always keep your resume below two pages.
· Make sure you arrive before time for any interview.
· If possible, seek a personal referral as it is a key to landing jobs today.
· Remember to clean up your social media profiles.
· Always be yourself and smile during interviews.
