Resume Resources

Where to start, how to start, what do I say, are questions that go through the minds of most people when they have to create a new resume. Creating a resume is a lot easier than it first appears. Just like anything else, there is a recipe that should be followed to create a great resume.

First, you need to start with your personal contact information. This information needs to be correct and appropriate for the position. Don't include email address or nicknames that suggestive or provocative such as, sexykitten or Joe "Sixpack" Jones. These names are not appropriate in the workplace and spell lawsuit for most employers.

Second, you will need to include your work experience on your resume starting with the most recent job. Employers want to see a steady and consistent work history for the last 7-10 years. Anything beyond this is bordering on TMI. Unless there is a specific job beyond 10 years that is directly related to the position you are applying for, then the employer probably will not spend their time reading a lengthy resume.

Third, you should include your education and skills on your resume. This is where you should relate to the position you are applying for. Telling your potential employer that you are skilled as a Ham Radio Operator probably will not help you get that Accounting position. Rather, use keywords tailored to the position.

Finally, review your resume for grammatical errors. Misspelled words and run on sentences will reduce your chance of getting an interview. Compare your resume to the job posting for the proper use of keywords and skills.

Below are some other resources to use to further increase your chances that your resume will stand out from the pack:
