How not to be an office slacker

Posted by admin on July 4, 2012

This doesn’t just happen in government offices. Office slacking is everywhere, which is such a shame because it brings the overall team productivity down and wastes office resources. So how do you go about avoiding being an office slacker? Here are a few tips to keep yourself effective in the workplace.

Plan your work week. Don’t be overwhelmed by your job. List your tasks for the week in the order of priority. Put your tasks in a planner or calendar. You can try Google Calendar, a simple online tool where you can input your daily tasks and schedule. You can even add a reminder or share the whole calendar to the team. You can also easily sync Google Calendar to your mobile phone or tablet.

Learn how to communicate. It is vital for a team to have a working communication between each other. So if you feel that you’ve been given too much work for such a short amount of time, or no work is being assigned to you, communicate this with your boss. If not, conflict will definitely arise from the situation. Communication helps bridge the gap and encourages collaboration.

Avoid distractions. Be it the television or the internet, avoid tuning into the outside world during office hours (except, if it’s a part of your job). Don’t check your Facebook or Twitter during these times. Use the internet only for work-related transactions such as emailing. Distractions will drain your office time and lessen your productive hours. Concentrate on your tasks for the day.

Take a break. When you feel like you’re getting nowhere on the current task you are doing, pull back and take a short break. A Cornell University study has shown that regular breaks for coffee or a bit of stretching increases work productivity. Never skip your lunch breaks, and when you feel like you’ve been overly stressed for the week, don’t be afraid to take a vacation leave. Breaks and leaves are put there for a reason, so that once you come back from them, you’ll feel more refreshed and ready to get back on track.

Work on a career you love. Never be satisfied with the phrase “love your job.” Do not settle for a job just because of convenience or because it’s what you’ve been used to. If you’re satisfied and passionate about your work, then energy, efficiency, and inspiration for that job will freely flow. Don’t just love your job; instead, strive for a job that will make you happy and contented as a human being.
